Me Anga Whakamua – Facing the Future

A powerful portrait series created in response to the 250th anniversary of the first encounters between Māori and Captain Cook. This work reflects the memories, reflections, and future hopes of tangata whenua who took part in the Tuia 250 commemorations. First exhibited at the Hihiaua Cultural Centre in October 2020, the series was shown at the New Zealand Portrait Gallery in 2025. Janet Hetaraka & Diane Stoppard produced a beautiful coffee table book, published in 2020, which accompanies the project — featuring portraits, interviews, and essays by Tohunga Te Warahi Hetaraka, Professor Alison Jones, and rangatahi leader Justice Hetaraka.
